Afghanistan's Largest Mosque

Right in the heart of Zarnegar Park, surrounded by lush green trees, stands a stunning architecture that beautifully mixes traditional and modern design. This is the famous Abdul Rahman Mosque, also known by many as the “Grand Mosque.” The construction of this breathtaking mosque began back in 2001 on a 1.4-hectare piece of land. It was completed in 2009 and officially opened in 2012 by then-president Hamid Karzai, when the first Friday prayer was held there. The mosque was designed by the well-known engineer Mir Hafizullah and funded by one of Afghanistan’s most respected businessmen, Haji Abdul Rahman, is why the mosque bears his name.

This mosque has three floors and can hold up to 10,000 worshippers simultaneously! One of the best things about it is that the third floor is dedicated to women, giving them a comfortable and peaceful place to pray. The mosque features 14 beautifully crafted domes and two towering minarets, each standing an impressive 62 meters tall, making them visible from far away.

Inside, the mosque is decorated with stunning Islamic art and verses from the Holy Quran, creating a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere. But that’s not all—attached to the mosque is a large religious school and an impressive library with over 15,000 books. It’s a perfect place for those seeking both faith and knowledge.

The Abdul Rahman Mosque isn’t just a place to pray—it’s a symbol of Afghanistan’s deep respect for religion, culture, and community. It stands proudly as a reminder of the country’s rich spiritual heritage and love for beautiful architecture.
